On Saturday September 10 at 2200hrs, Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue were called to Golden Ears Provincial Park to search for a missing 28 y/o male hiker. Subject was last seen about 10 minutes north of the emergency shelter on Panorama Ridge. He had become fatigued while attempting to hike the summitt of Golden Ears with a group of friends. He and a female companion decided to wait while the rest of the group summitted. While they were waiting, he told his companion that he was going to go find some water. When he failed to return, his hiking partners searched for an hour and then hiked out to alert the authorities.

RMSAR sent four teams to cover the more common places where hikers become disoriented. One team was sent to the summit where they interviewed campers. No sign of our subject was seen. RCMP helicopter Air One flew over the area searching with FLIR but other than several tenters and a campfire, nothing was located. As our members had been out all night, assistance was requested from Coquitlam SAR as well as North Shore Rescue. Talon Helicopters arrived to transport teams on and off the mountain. RCMP helicopter Air Five arrived to assist in the daytime search. Teams were inserted into drainages on both sides of Panorama Ridge. It was during an overflight of one of these areas that our subject was located alive and in relatively good condition. A team was inserted above his location and upon making contact with the subject, they determined that he was unable to make the hike up to the helicoter's position. A H.E.T.'s extraction was requested for both the subject and the ground crew. North Shore Rescue's specialty team was contacted to perform this procedure. All people were soon transported back to Ridge Command. Subject was given food and water as well as a lecture on hiking safety. Task was concluded at 1830hrs Sunday Sept 11.

On Friday September 2, Ridge-Meadows SAR received a page from the RCMP regarding a missing hiker in the Tingle peak area of Golden Ears Park. The subject had been reported overdue by a relative when he had failed to return home as scheduled. A text message sent on Aug 29 indicated that he was on the way back down from Tingle Peak and would be heading to the Gurney creek drainage. We were told that the subject had canoed up the lake to the start of his hike. We had very little information on the subject other than a physical description and possible destination. His cellphone was pinged and called on several occasions but it had either died or was turned off. One of his text messages indicated that if he was not out on time that we should start looking at a lat/long position which put him near the top end of Stave Lake!

Wednesday, 20 July 2011
On Wednesday July 20,2011 at 2040hrs, RMSAR was contacted by Ridge Meadows RCMP to respond to Golden Ears Park for a hiker who had called in to say he was lost somewhere on the summit of Alouette Mountain. He had been trying to find his way down for several hours and was becoming cold and tired. RCMP Air 2 helicopter was in the area and proceeded to search the area. Talon Helicopters were also contacted to fly searchers to the top of the mountain. Air 2 was able to spot the subject and despite cloudy conditions, was able to land and pick up the subject.
The subject was a 19 y/o male who was ill equipped for the hike. Dressed only in runners, shorts, shirt and a light jacket and carrying only food and water, he was suffering from the early stages of hypothermia. Had he not been picked up by the helicopter, he would have been in much worse shape by the time search crews would have located him.

On Monday July 11,2011 at 19:15 hrs RMSAR was requested by Ridge Meadows RCMP to respond to the Pitt River bridge for a possible jumper. Subject was last seen on the North side of the bridge, leaning outwards and hanging on to the rails.
Coquitlam Search and Rescue was also contacted and requested to search the western shore of the Pitt River as well as search upstream from the Fraser River to the Pitt River bridge.
Coquitlam SAR had ground and swiftwater rescue members searching close to the shore. In doing so, one of the ground teams was confronted by a male who became belligerent and kicked at one of the searchers. RCMP responded immediately and placed the male in custody.
Nothing was located by either Coquitlam or Ridge Meadows and the search was stood down at approx. 2310hrs. As R2 was being pulled from the water, a boat came in to the dock and reported seeing what they felt was a body floating in the river mid-way between the bridge and the marina. R2 immediately put back in the water and did 3 sweeps of the area in question. Nothing was located and the search was again suspended at 2355hrs.
