Overview:
You will need an ice axe and basic mountaineering skills. You should make sure you can navigate back on your route in fog so wands and flagging tape are suggested. Under some conditions (e.g. spring) there can be definite avalanche danger and under other conditions (e.g. fall) you might need crampons because the snow will be very hard (aka ice). I would definitely take a light rope and an anchor sling or two. The steep forest trail is treacherous when wet (normal). This is a formidable hike, even by the easiest approach. The start is at the NE end of Alouette Lake at an elevation of 125m. The summit, for those who make it, is 2087m. - a gain of close to 2000m.

James, Alix and I had originally planned to run 30 kilometers in the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, but Coal our Black Lab wouldn't let us leave without him. So we changed our plans, and decided to run to Hector Ferguson Lake (yes, someone was aware of our change of plans…). Other people and the 103 Best Hikes guidebook have noted that the trail was around 27-28 kilometers. With this information we calculated that this hike/trail run would take us approximately four and a half hours. We began our trip at 1100 hours, a little late for hiking, but we figured that by starting late and running that we would make up for the late start, and still get to sleep in. |

Kevin had some holiday time coming up so he organized this little trek for August. The plan was to camp at the shoreline of Alouette Lake and do a long day trip up and down the mountain, a 2000 meter elevation gain. I'd attempted this climb a few years ago but was turned back by bad weather at the alpine level so was anxious to try again. On Aug 3rd, we were transported up to the end of Alouette Lake (many thanks to Kevin's brother Trevor for this!) and made camp on the beach (elevation 120 meters) on the north side of the lake, just southwest of the mouth of the Alouette River. After supper, and a beautiful evening we retired to our sleeping bags in preparation for an early start the next morning. |

Paged out Friday night for people to join me on this hike. Karen was the only one foolish enough to agree. Met at the East Canyon parking lot at 8 AM, on the trail by 8:15 (I love punctual people!). Headed out Lower Falls trail with the intent to go past Lower Falls and Upper Falls to link up with the East Canyon Road.

Five team members (Dean, Liz, Alix, Trevor and Jeff [friend of Trevor and Alix], Mike) and myself thought a snowshoe trip up Alouette Mtn. was in order. |
